Angie Watts of the Cavalier pub in Marston, Oxford, is pictured. She has a similar hair and colouring to the “loveable landlady” of BBC’s EastEnders, but says any likeness ends there. Watts manages the Cavalier with her husband, Barry, but they don’t call him “Dirty Den”. Watts admits to watching and enjoying the EastEnders series and thinks her namesake is a “super” character. You’ve heard of Angie and Den down the Queen Vic, that famous “bar of soap” in BBC’s EastEnders? Well, Oxford has its very own Angie Watts, Angie Watts of the Cavalier pub in Marston, that is. She may have similar hair and colouring, and a bubbly per- sonality to match that of the televi- sion programme’s loveable landlady. But Oxford’s Angie, pictured right, likes to think that’s where any likeness ends. 99 “Yes. The customers sometimes pull my leg about it,” said the mother-of-two. “They say I couldn’t keep up with the exploits of the EastEnders’ character. I think my husband’s glad about that,” she chuckled. And our real life Angie is a York- shire lass by birth, unlike her cockney counterpart on television. – She manages the Cavaller with her husband, Barry who she’s quick to point out- they don’t (re- peat don’t) call Dirty Den. She does admit to watching and enjoying the series, however, and thinks her namesake is a “super” character. hat the 1986 She even thinks that the Cavalier is in many ways like the Queen Vic with a good community spirit, although it also attracts a lot of outsiders into Marston. “EastEnders makes the pub trade look very glamorous, though,” she added. “It doesn’t show a lot of the hard work involved.” -8 MAY 1986 Britvic OX-INNS CAVALER – Mountains Mi 2/10/18
