On March 13, 1970, a team of workmen were seen cleaning the pond in the quadrangle of the Oxford University Press building in Walton Street, Oxford. This was the first time in 20 years that a machine was being used to carry out the task, with the last cleaning having been done in 1950. To allow for the task, part of the turf of the surrounding lawn had to be removed.
