Six money bags fall from my Securicor van The two men stopped their car and helped the Securicor driver to retrieve the trail of bags. Bags stuffed with hundreds of pounds in cash spilled into a road in Oxford when a Securicor van veered round a tight corner. Passing motorists watched in amazement as six money bags tumbled out of the van as it left Securicor’s depot on the Watling- ton Road industrial estate. According to eye-witnesses, the van driver sped away unaware of what had happened until he was alerted by other motorists sound- ing horns and flashing head- lights. 688 330 58 Page… Mr Gene Wheeler, who was driving to his plastering job in Little Haseley with his friend Mr Malcolm Goodgame, said the bags fell out of a hatch door in the side of the van as it turned into Watlington Road. “As he came round the corner the money literally flew out,” said Mr Wheeler, 35, of Osborne Close, Kidlington. “I put and flashed s but at first carried on – it wasn’t until the last minute that he stopped,” he added. “One of the bags I picked up must have had 10,000 in it be- cause it was jam-packed full of notes. The other bags were full of coins,” said Mr Wheeler. “If I was that way inclined, I could easily have picked up a couple of bags and ran off into Blackbird Leys. We saved the driver a lot of hassle.” According to Mr Wheeler, the van driver blamed a colleague for failing to close or lock the chute door properlv. Mr Gene Wheeler (left) and Mr Malcolm Goodgame, who picked up the money Mr Goodgame, of Cranmer Road, Cowley, said he picked up four beige-coloured bags of coins and Mr Wheeler recovered a red bag full of notes. They said a sixth bag was spotted by a pedestrian as the van was about to drive off again. A Securicor spokes- man confirmed the inci- dent, which happened at 7.45am last Thursday, and said it was being in- vestigated. He could not comment on how the money came to fall out of the van, but said the amount was made up of 1p, 2p and 5p coins and stressed that Mr Wheeler could not have known the con- tents of the bags. “A number of bags did make their way out of the vehicle they con- tained mixed coin and the amount was very low. It is very unusual for incidents of this type to occur,” he said. “We are very grateful for the public spirited- ness and prompt action of Mr Wheeler and we will be thanking him from headquarters very oon.”
