Emlyn Hughes, former footballer and television star, was delighted to bump into an old friend when he opened the new MFT furniture store in Botley Road, Oxford. Sixty-year-old Frank Hogg, of Abingdon Road, Drayton, gave Emlyn his first job as an apprentice motor mechanic when he left school in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. Hundreds of customers queued to get Emlyn’s autograph, while the Kennington Silver Band provided entertainment. Mr Hogg said: “Emlyn was amazed to see us. He hasn’t changed a bit. He always had a lovely personality. “We have kept in touch over the years. He has done so well.” Mr Hogg and his wife Mary, also co retired in February after running Draytor Post Office for seven years. Emlyn later played a big part in turning Liverpool into one of the world’s mos Ox firme successful football clubs and played for England. Now he appears regularly on television’s Question of Sport programme. Emlyn opened the new store with the Lord Mayor of Oxford, Mrs Betty Standingford. She said: “I am very impressed. It is bright and cheerful and there are lots of new ideas. There is a need for somewhere like this in Oxford.” Kennington Sil-er Band entertained hun- dreds of customers who came to the store. Many queued to get Emlyn’s autograph. MFI said 35 new jobs have been created at the store, bringing the staff to 52. The company inocked down its old build- ing six months ago and rebuilt the new store on the same site.
