Oxford University players bask in the glow of their historic victory over Cambridge in the 1986 Varsity Match, ending Cambridge’s record five-year run in the match. The win was seen as a fillip for the local rugby scene, with Oxford University’s second string, the OU Greyhounds, also receiving praise for holding the Cambridge University LX Club to an exciting 9-9 draw in the mini-Varsity match at Iffley Road. Blues’ victory heralds upturn in fortunes THE time of year plus the lack of much football for the past fortnight makes it more than appropriate for a little, halfway, stock- taking. Overall, it is pleasant to report a slight upturn in fortunes of local rugby. The greatest, most notable effort of this first half-season was Oxford University’s superb performance in ending Cambridge’s record five-year run in the Varsity match last month. A lucky, “one-off” job some may sneer, but still a truly and outstanding, gutsy performance against the odds. Difficult The University’s second string, the OU Greyhounds, also did themselves proud in holding the Cambridge University LX Club to an exciting 9-9 draw in the mini-Varsity match in difficult conditions at Iffley Road. Also, after a fairly middling start, Ox- fordshire too won their first game since 1982, beating Buckinghamshire 22-6 at Aylesbury. This made no difference to their County Championship status but was a straw in the wind and maybe raised slight hopes for the future. There may be further encouragement too in the formation of an Oxfordshire under 21 XV. This is mainly aimed at giving some continuity for young players from schools and Colts before moving on hopefully to senior and full county honours. The plans are well in hand and three matches are planned. But full details have not yet been announced. The organising committee comprises Gar- eth Lewis (Banbury), Graham Horner (Henley) and Roger Long (Banbury). On the club front everthing seems to be going along steadily if not sensationally with the main interest now centred on the Ox- fordshire Morland Brewery Knockout Cup quarter-finals. JA These games, to be played on Sunday week, are between Bicester v Oxford, Chip- ping Norton v Henley, Oxford Old Boys v Cholsey, and Witney v Littlemore. One home and three away victories, do you think? A fuller preview next week. E JAN 1986 A OXFORD University’s moment of victory over Cambridge, which gave a fillip for the local rugby scene
