On November 6, 1980, signmaker Ray Gough of Oxford City Council’s highways department was pictured at work on one of the emergency signs warning motorists of traffic chaos caused by a burst water main on Abingdon Road. Although it had not been possible to give motorists early warning on the bypasses due to a lack of suitable signs, emergency signs had been put up at Thames Street and Weirs Lane before the morning rush hour. Mr Ray Gough, one of the highways department signmakers, is pictured at I work on one of the signs. Mr Ron Frampton, deputy city engineer, said it had not been possible to give motorists early warn- ing on the bypasses because they had no suitable signs. “Normally, the signs state where the incident is, and you can’t make them until you know,” he said. Emergency signs were put up at Thames Street and Weirs Lane before the morning rush hour warn- ing drivers that Abingdon Road was shut and more were put out around the city later, OM- THURSDAY PAGE 2ND /cx 302 -6 NOV 1980
