mord FLASHBACK: Chaplin at the Encaenia. 937 Charles 1962 () mytoy. Chaplin’s Oxford controversy Doctor of Letters of Oxford Uni- versity. THERE was a more controv- ersial side to Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, known to the world trousered clown, who has as the baggy- died, aged 88. This was displayed 15 years ago when Sir Charles, then plain Charlie Chaplin came to Oxford to receive an honorary degree of [/mo wa f Chaplin, who had an English childhood of poverty, held gener- ally Left Wing views and became an outspoken critic of America And much controversy was aroused at the 1962 Encaenia when Mr Chaplin was honoured alongside the American Secretary of State Mr Dean Rusk, who received the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law. Some claimed it was a deliber- ate attempt to embarrass not only Mr Rusk but all Americans. But Mr Chaplin told the Oxford Mail then: “I have not bitter feel- ing now. It is not a thing one can carry on. Some of my best friends are Americans.” He said it was nonsense to say he was a Communist. Despite the bitterness which 2961 NNr 6 Z surrounded much of his later work, he will be best remembered as the world-famous funny man in his creation of the tramp-baggy trousers, cane and all. Sir Charles, who was knighted in 1975, had eight children from his fourth marriage. He died at his chateau-style home overlooking Lake Geneva, Switzerland. Doctors said he simply died of old age.
