On Saturday, the 126th Varsity athletics match at Iffley Road will be marked by a special race, with two of athletics’ all-time greats, John Landy and Ron Clarke, reuniting to commemorate the official reopening of the new track and the 36th anniversary of Roger Bannister’s 1954 mile record attempt. Lunch – BACK Mile greats at Iffley Road SATURDAY’S attempt to break Roger Bannister’s legendary mile record at Amey Road will be watched by two of athletics all-time greats. 0661 1000 m RON CLARKE reunion Adde Australians John Landy and Ron Clarke are flying in for a reunion and they have asked to attend the special race which marks the official reopen- ing of the new im track. The race will be the highlight of the 126th Varsity athletics match and organisers are especially delighted that Landy has asked to attend. In the spring of 1954 Bannister, Chris Chattaway and Landy were each bidding to become the first man 01-30 E PRESS AS 85, Fleet Stree Ros CLARKE hoy s to break the four minute mile barrier and on May 6 Bannister achieved im- mortality with his 3.59.4 at Iffley Road. Just six weeks later, in Finland, Landy broke the record again in n also which meeting included Chattaway. Clarke, a bronze medallist in the Tokyo Olympics of 1964, held several world records. Sir Roger Bannister will also be at Iffley Road on Saturday, alongside Landy and Clarke, and Norris Mc- Whirter will commentate on the 4pm race, just as he did 36 years ago. Page. 1661 A
