American Brigade and other units have held the most remote Allied front in Europe – in the Alps, botween France and Italy. Seldom in the war reports, the unspectacular job done by the packhorse artillery of this Alpine force has been carried out through the bitter Winter under arduous conditions, often in the clouds, sometimes above them, and always surrounded by snow and ice. Guns, ammunition and heavy supplies had to be moved by mule train; when this was impossible the men raised a funicular line between the mountain tops to get their 75mm. howitzers into new positions.
