LARRY Nelson’s putting genius proved the thorn in Europe’s side as the US won three of the second series of four-ball Ryder Cup matches today. That took them into a one point lead Heath Walton at today. Nelson, who sank a 50 foot putt on the last green to win his foursomes match with Lee Trevino yester- day, holed 15-foot putts at both the 17th and 18th as he and Tom Kite beat Sandy Lyle and Mark James by one hole. and Langer Bernard Manuel Pinero gained the only European victory and with both Trevino and Jerry Pate and Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson winning their matches, the United States, one point down overnight, bd by 6 rubbers to 5. Nelson has now won seven Ryder Cup matches out of seven and he again demonstrated his superb temperament in the closing holes. At the 17th Lyle had already putted out for a and looked birdie two almost certain to win the hole yet Nelson coolly rol- led in his 15-footer for a half. 19 SEP 1981 Sandy Lyle split his trousers at the first hole today and donned waterproof overtrousers to cover up his embarrassment. Here he lines up a shot in the match against Nelson & Kite. Then the quiet American did it again at the last, this time for a winning putt. Pate and Trevino had the biggest victory, trouncing Nick Faldo and Sam Torr- ance seven and five, being eight under par for the 13 holes, and it brought Pate’s first match-play win in Bri- tain in seven attempts. He had previously lost four Walker Cup matches at St Andrews in 1975, his first round match in the Amateur Championship at Hoylake the same year, and his Ryder Cup four-ball yesterday. Watson and Nicklaus again proved a most for- midable pair, beating Des Smyth and Jose Maria Can- izares three and two after leading from the third hole and both Americans having four birdies.
