Terry MacDonald and Frances Sell won the annual veterans’ mixed American handicap tournament in Abingdon after a closely contested knock-out second stage. Handicapping by Val Owen, Dave Wootton and Ron Whitfield, the energetic trio who have organised this event for a number of years, proved to be so good that few of the games were over quickly. They assured themselves of the title with a tough eam display in a pulsating match with fellow conten- ders Kestrel. All the Abingdon pairs secured a brace of rubbers o shoot down Kestrel and claim the title with a 6-3 win. Congratulations to Phil Simmons and Steve Marshall, 3ob Gibbins and Daniel Scharf, Dave Wootton and Stephen Christie. In Division 5 AERE B crushed Cowley Road Methodist B 8-1. Colin Tanner and Bob Newey snatched the one CRM rubber to shatter Harwell’s hopes of a clean sweep. Manuli e Abingdon Ladies were also in win- ning form in Division 1. First the put down The Leys 6-3 and followed with a tight fight at home to Abbey which they secured 5-4 led by Dawn Torgersen and Lydia Moul. Beryl Richardson and Janice Alen were on top G 17 AUG 1992 Veterars BADMINTON NOTES form for Abbey but their three rubbers could not sway the final scoreline in their favour. In Division 3 Mary Bak- ewell and Hazel Mason were undefeated for Elms Court at home to Wood- stock. But they lacked adequate support from their other pairs and Woodstock returned with the points after a 5-4 vic- tory. Hat-trick CEGB overpowered Cowley Road Methodists B in Division 5. Sheila Marshall and Gill Martin hit a hat-trick for CEGB with Penny Flinders and Audrey Devall also gaining three in their team’s 7-2 win. Badm Horspath B tasted both the sweetness of victory and the bitterness of defeat in Mixed Division 5A. Two pairs Steve Pope and Esme Gibbs, Tom Gillan and Isabella Gibbs maintained a 100 per cent. record to help Horspath to a 6-3 win over Blackstone. But the team came un- stuck at home to Thame with only Gillan and Deb- bie Thompson able to make any impression on their opponents. Their two rubbers were in vain as Martin Wright and Kassie Midwinter blasted their way to a three rubbers for Thame, sup- ported by Steve Merrell and Liz Secker (two) and Adrian Dite and Christie Chitty for a 7-2 victory.
