Vivien Lees, a final year medical student at Lady Margaret Hall in Oxford, won the women’s title of the Saucony 1343 marathon. Ms. Lees had jogged 60 miles a week for the past three months in preparation for the race, which was the culmination of nine months of planning by Radley Ladies Athletics Club and Abingdon Lions. Ambulancemen and the police reported a quiet day and only two runners were taken to hospital for treatment, while about 500 runners dropped out during the race.
