On March 12, 1954, workmen in Oxford made temporary repairs to New Inn Hall Street after a section of the road collapsed. The road was closed for several hours while the repairs were made, causing congestion near the hump-back bridge when the stream of traffic was stopped by the traffic lights at Gloucester Green. It is believed that the subsidence was caused by a rotted or destroyed wooden plug in a sewer connection, leading to soil falling into the sewer and then being swept away. A similar subsidence was also noticed in St. Giles’s and was patched up temporarily. On March 12, 1954, workmen in Oxford made temporary repairs to New Inn Hall Street after a section of the road collapsed. CREWIND om 30/7/11 11 dRoad work in New Inn Hall Street, Oxford, yesterday after- noon where part of the surface collapsed. On the left is Mr. H. A. Williams, Highways Superintendent. The street was closed for several hours while temporary repairs were made. Traffic was diverted through Worcester Street. Congestion occurred near the hump-back bridge when the stream was held up by the traffic lights at Gloucester Green, but New Inn Hall Street was re- opened in time for the evening rush. The subsidence is believed to be the result of a wooden plug in a sewer connection having been either rotted or destroyed by rats. This would lead to soil falling into the sewer and then being swept away. A complete repair will be made at a week-end, when traffic is lightest. Workmen will have to dig to a depth of about 12ft. to reach the sewer. A similar subsidence was also noticed yesterday in St. Giles’s. Workmen patched up the surface temporarily. B 12-3-54
