11-year-old An- nabel Priest was crowned the To- wesey May Queen at the village’s May Festival yesterday. The crowning moment was marked by Emma Fryer, the previous year’s May Queen. The festival featured Morris dancing and a maypole, as well as a fair on the village green that featured country crafts and raised money for village funds. The festival began on Saturday evening with a Victorian music hall and ended last night with a ceilidh. Members of the Oxfordshire group of the Camping Club of Great Britain camped just outside the village and many wore Victorian costume for both the music hall and the Sunday fair. The event was organized by Mr Louis Rushby, who praised the enthusiasm of the children for making the event a success.11-year-old An- nabel Priest was crowned the To- wesey May Queen at the village’s May Festival yesterday. Crowning moment at village 5 MAY 199 festival THE CROWNING moment of a big day for 11-year-old An- nabel Priest (above), the To- wesey May Queen, as she has the crown placed on her head by last year’s May Queen, nine-year-old Emma Fryer. On the right, some of the children are seen dancing around the maypole during the village’s May Festival yes- terday. Earlier the children had turned out to provide a colourful procession through the village. The organiser, Mr Louis Rushby said the children’s en- thusiasm should ensure a suc- cessful future for the festival. He said that although adults supported the festival it was the children’s enthusiasm which made it a great success. Maypole and Morris danc- ing were principal attractions of the afternoon with the fair on the village green – which featured country crafts mak- ing money for village funds. The festival started on Saturday evening with a Vic- torian music hall and ended last night with a ceilidh. Mem- bers of Oxfordshire group of the Camping Club of Great Britain camped just outside the village and many wore Victorian costume for both the music hall and the Sunday fair. Mr Rushby said: “This is the village’s small festival – it is essentially a children’s af- fair and yet again they have made a magnificent job of it.” MAY 1975 PAPER.
