Paul draws his way to two competition prizes A 14-year-old Oxford schoolboy is making a name for himself as a cartoonist. “I had a channel tunnel digger, split down the middle, with one half French and the other half English. It was called Bert Pierre,” said Paul. Paul Downes, of Horseman Close, Marston, impressed the judges so much in a cartoon competition that he took first and second prizes in his age group. He is sharpening his talents, ready for the final of the National Young Cartoonist of the Year award in London next month. Europe Paul, a pupil of Cherwell School, won the 14-18 years age group of the Birming- ham and Central regional final awards. Entries totalling 5,500 from Europe and Scandinavia were received for the ninth year of the competition. Paul improved last year’s third place in his age group in the regional final with this year’s portfolio of cartoons which included one about the channel tunnel. Paul decided to try his hand at cartoons a few years ago and he also enjoys making comic strips. Friends and relations received examples of his work and Cherwell School asked him to design the front cover of a booklet about the school. Paul said he didn’t have an idol and preferred to use his own ideas. He hopes his skill will land him a job in the design/advertising field. In the meantime Paul carries on reading the Beano acomic weekly and entertaining his friends and family.
