On December 31, 2008, five heroes of the Oxford School blaze were presented with awards from the Chairman of the Governor, Mr Fred Ingram. The fire, caused by vandals who had broken into the building, caused thousands of pounds worth of damage. Mr Ingram praised Temple Cowley School pupils Simone Palmer, 12, and Sharon Owen, 13, for raising the alarm and quickly alerting three workmen – Don Jones, 47, Leslie Marsh, 16, and Raymond Hambridge, 29 – who grabbed fire extinguishers and tackled the blaze.
