Each flat has an inset balcony, which gives an enclosed feeling and avoids vertigo. Below is a model for the lay- out of the centre of Black- bird Leys. The buildings are grouped round an elon- gated traffic island which is the culminating point of the main link road from the pro- posed Cowley Centre in Between Towns Road. On the west of the island it is proposed to build a unit of twelve shops in three articu- lated blocks. Each shop will I have a two-storey maisonette above for the use of the tenants. The model shows a 3-storey block of flats adjacent, and the development to the rear of these blocks will be varied housing in the form of two-storey houses, three- storey flats and four-storey maisonettes. On the south-east corner, is a proposed secondary modern school.
