On January 2, 1970, Steve Pritchett, Peter Ite, and Brian Jackson, set off on an ambitious 35,000 mile journey around the world in a converted Land Rover. The trio, with one member from Oxford, had sold their cars and boats in order to finance the trip. The 10-year-old vehicle was in first-rate condition, with 27 gallons of petrol and 16 gallons of water to fuel their journey. They planned to travel through France, Italy, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Greece, Iran, West Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Afghanistan, Australia, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The journey was to have a bonus for Steve Pritchett, a member of the Oxford Branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club, who planned to explore the Great Barrier Reef off Australia’s east coast. On January 2, 1970, Steve Pritchett, Peter Ite, and Brian Jackson, set off on an ambitious 35,000 mile journey around the world in a converted Land Rover.
