Memories of steam days at toy fair on meths. The burning wick heated the meths, which in turn heated the boiler. By opening a valve, puffs of steam blew out and the pressure drove the cylinders and moved the train. Michael Window and Ellis Potter, both 12, with a vintage locomotive. Planes and trains galore were admired, handled and bought in a collectors’ toy fair. More than 70 stallholders from all over the country landed at the Exeter Hall, Kidlington, on Saturday for a toy fair organised by Richard and Joyce Atkins, of Steeple Aston. One of the pieces on sale was a 1928 delivery van made of tin plate and wood. The push-along toy, standing just over a foot high, was selling for “hundreds of pounds.” 99 Another rare item at the fair was an Edwardian steam train. The train, painted in burgundy, black and gold, ran puodel One young visitor to the fair had a spot of bother. David Simmons, 10, of Deanfield Road, Botley, Oxford, went to the fair looking for a special brand of snow- plough to add to his 30-strong collection of cars. “I saw the snowplough when I came in,” he said, “but I thought I would try and get it cheaper. When I went back to the first stall it had gone.” 29 AUG 1983
