Hoard discovered Friends Philip Green and Jason Church became junior policemen for a day when they uncovered a buried hoard of old coins in a city park. No-one knows for certain how the coins came to be left hidden in the park. Mrs Irene Green, Philip’s mother, has her own theory: “I think they were stolen from a house and the burglar could not spend them so he tried to bury them. The two eight-year-old pals made their surprise and mysterious discovery while playing in Bury Knowle Park at Headington. They are both pictured at Cowley police station where the old pre- decimal money is now being looked after. They were playing in trees and bushes next to the library when Philip pictured above, left, found the haul in a dip by a hedge. “I saw a big pile of mud and when I kicked it some of the earth came off and there were lots of coins,” said Philip, “The park-keeper then came along and said he would phone the police about it.” POLICE The several hundred coins comprised old halfpennies and a few foreign coins. Philip also found two empty bags lying on the top of the pile of mud marked Midland Bank.” one was “It looked as if someone had sorted through the coins to check that they were all old ones.” Philip of Hawthorn Avenue and Jason, pictured above, right, who lives in Barton Road, Headington, will be able to claim the coins for themselves if the owner does not come forward in the next six weeks. Cowley police have checked for re- ports of similar coins missing without success. But it doesn’t look as if the boys, who are both pupils at St Andrew’s School, Headington, have made their fortune. A spokesman for coin dealers Sov- ereign Jewellery of Oxford said: “They really are worth very little. They will fetch slightly less than their face value.” Picture by Peter Floyd
