Two hundred people from Didcot were screened for diabetes at a free testing station in Didcot Market Place provided by the Wallingford and District Lions Club. Local doctor, Mr Keith Beswick and his trainee, Mr David Stanthorpe, administered the simple pin-prick tests. Lions Clubs nationally have set up the screening sessions to reduce the dangers of undiagnosed diabetes, as there are estimated to be 600,000 people with the condition who are unaware. Only one woman from the two hundred tested was referred to her doctor for further tests, to which not all those referred end up having the disease. Lions’ member Mr Victor Sprules stated that it was the numbers screened that was important and that thousands of people all over the country had been screened thanks to the Lions Club. Two hundred people from Didcot were screened for diabetes at a free testing station in Didcot Market Place provided by the Wallingford and District Lions Club. Two hundred Didcot people were screened for diabetes at the free tes- ting station provided by Wallingford and District Lions Club. The simple pin-prick tests were carried out by local doctor, Mr Keith Beswick, and his trainee, Mr David Stanthorpe, in Didcot Mar- ket Place. Lions Clubs nationally hope to reduce the dangers of undiagnosed diabetes with free diabetes screening offers. They have set up the screening sessions because although there are 600,000 diagnosed diabetics who en- joy a normal life, an esti- mated 600,000 people are still undiagnosed and at risk. to If not treated and con- trolled early enough, dia- betes lead can complications such as blind- ness, kidney and heart dam- age, or infection in the lower limbs leading to gangrene and possible am- putation. It is now the world’s third largest killer. Of the 200 people screened for diabetes, only U one woman was referred to her doctor for futher tests. Even those referred do not always turn out to have the disease. Lions’ member Mr Victor Sprules was pleased with the lack of detections. He said: “It is not the numbers you find but the numbers that are screened which are important.” He said thousands of people all over the country had been screened thanks to the Lions Club and each and screened person cleared was one fewer in- danger.
